Nurturing Rugby Talent in the Western Cape

At Portfutures, we believe in the power of sport to transform lives and communities. Our commitment to Corporate Social Investment (CSI) is deeply rooted in our passion for rugby and our desire to create opportunities for young athletes in the Western Cape.

Led by our Chairman, Mike Roper, a former captain and Team Manager of Northampton Saints and current Honorary Life Member, we have dedicated ourselves to supporting grassroots rugby initiatives that nurture talent and foster community spirit.
Our Rugby Funding Initiatives
Portfutures is proud to support various rugby programmes that benefit young players in the Western Cape. Our initiatives focus on providing resources, equipment, and opportunities to aspiring rugby players, helping them develop their skills and pursue their dreams on the field.

Supporting Rising Stars: The Gino Cupido Story
One of our most inspiring success stories is that of Gino Cupido. We began supporting Gino when he was just 15 years old, recognizing his exceptional talent and dedication to the sport. Today, Gino has become a shining example of what young athletes can achieve with the right support and opportunities.

Gino's achievements include:
-
Playing in the U18 SA Rugby Craven Week 2022, representing Western Province
-
Selection for the SA Schools A squad in 2022
-
Becoming one of the youngest players to represent Western Province in the Currie Cup
-
Currently playing as an Outside Centre for Western Province
Gino's journey from a promising young talent to a Junior Springbok demonstrates the impact that targeted support can have on an athlete's career. We are immensely proud of his accomplishments and continue to follow his progress with great interest.

Empowering Local Teams: The Metho Squirrels
Another key focus of our CSI efforts is supporting local rugby teams that form the backbone of community sport. We are regular supporters of the Somerset West Primary School's "Metho Squirrels" under-7s and under-13s teams.

Working alongside CHEAFRICA and Le Roux Nel, our support for the Metho Squirrels includes:
-
Supplying rugby kits to ensure the young players are properly equipped
-
Providing rugby balls to facilitate training and matches
-
Contributing to the team's ongoing coaching and skill development
The Metho Squirrels, led by long-time rugby coordinator and coach Winston Baard, have a rich history and a unique team culture. Their "Metho Spirit haka" is a testament to the team's shared history and resilience, embodying the values of unity and strength that rugby instils in young players.

Our Commitment to Rugby Development
At Portfutures, we understand that investing in grassroots rugby is an investment in the future of the sport and the communities it serves. Through our support of individual talents like Gino Cupido and local teams like the Metho Squirrels, we aim to:
-
Provide opportunities for young athletes to pursue their rugby dreams
-
Enhance the quality of rugby programmes in the Western Cape
-
Foster community spirit and unity through sport
-
Contribute to the development of future rugby stars

CHE Africa

Portfutures and CHEAFRICA (www.cheafrica.net), an international catalyst organisation dedicated to generating funds and resources to support children's health and education projects in Africa, have established a collaborative partnership.
We offer marketing and social media services to CHEAFRICA, an organisation with a five-year history of funding Early Childhood Development (ECD) projects in Southern Africa.
Additionally, as a separate yet complementary initiative to its social media efforts, Portfutures has established a budget to directly fund Early Learning Programmes in ECD centres in the Western Cape, which have been developed by Masikhule Childcare (https://masikhule.org/).
Portfutures offers business support services to further CHEAFRICA's charitable mission, while also directly contributing to similar initiatives that align with CHEAFRICA's focus.
Empowering Early Childhood Development in the Western Cape

At Portfutures, we believe that investing in early childhood education is essential for building stronger communities and brighter futures. Our commitment to Corporate Social Investment includes support for vital initiatives in Early Childhood Development (ECD).
We are proud to partner with Masikhule, a social impact organisation making significant strides in empowering educators and children in marginalised communities across the Western Cape.
Led by our Chairman Mike Roper, we are committed to supporting Masikhule's innovative approaches to early learning. We understand that in today's digital age, access to technology can significantly enhance the learning experience for both educators and children.
We are thrilled to have contributed to Masikhule's efforts by funding the purchase of five tablets for deserving ECD Centres that follow its Early Learning Programme. Masikhule’s online programme, MASKOT, is incorporated throughout its training, and having access to tablets makes usage and teamwork much easier.
This contribution demonstrates our commitment to:
-
Enhancing access to digital learning tools in underserved communities
-
Supporting innovative teaching methods in early childhood education
-
Empowering educators with the resources they need to provide quality education
-
Bridging the digital divide in early learning environments
We recognise that the first few years of a child's life are crucial for their long-term development. By supporting organisations like Masikhule, we aim to
-
Improve the quality of early childhood education in marginalised communities
-
Empower educators with the skills and resources they need to excel
-
Create a strong foundation for lifelong learning among young children and
-
Contribute to breaking the cycle of poverty through education
At Portfutures, we believe that every child deserves access to quality early education, regardless of their background. If you share our vision and would like to contribute to initiatives like our partnership with Masikhule, we encourage you to get involved.
